If you're a contractor, facility manager, or serious DIYer who's about to install or replace a residential or light commercial boiler—specifically a Burnham Series 2 gas boiler—this is for you. I review heating equipment specs and installations as part of my quality compliance role, and I've seen the same issues pop up over and over. Before anything else, check the model number on the box against your project specs. I can't tell you how many times I've seen a Series 2 (which is a great, durable unit) get confused with a Series 3 or even a competitor's model in a rush order. Checkpoint: Look at the BTU input rating. That's the first place things go wrong. An undersized unit will struggle, an oversized one will short-cycle and waste fuel. Don't guess—check.

I've seen people try to wire the fan to the boiler's 'R' terminal because they wanted the fan to kick on with heat. That's a fire risk. Keep them separate.
4. 'This patio heater will help with warm-up.' No. A patio heater is not a substitute for proper boiler sizing. I had a client who tried to use a 48,000 BTU patio heater to 'supplement' their heating loop during construction. It didn't work, and it annoyed the neighbors. The boiler should handle the load alone.
Looking back, I should have been more vocal about checking the gas pressure at the meter before I started my first install. It was a 22,000 BTU/hr unit that was starving for gas because the line was too small. The vendor claimed it was 'within industry standard.'
