Take 10 minutes with these three questions:
- What do I need to heat? Just domestic hot water? Or also space heating? If both, and you want it done efficiently, a boiler is the way.
- What’s my time horizon? Staying in the building for 10+ years? A boiler’s higher upfront cost pays off. Selling in 5? Go cheap and simple.
- What’s my tolerance for complexity? A water heater is simpler. A boiler has more controls, but also more flexibility and efficiency. If you hate maintenance, a tankless or heat pump might be better.
I’ve been burned (literally, once) by choosing “cheap” without considering TCO. After comparing quotes for a $4,200 annual contract on our current system, I built a cost calculator spreadsheet for our procurement team.
