In my role coordinating emergency heating repairs for a local mechanical company, I get the same phone call every winter: the house is cold, the old Burnham boiler won't light, and a contractor has already suggested a heat pump. What Is a Heat Pump?

Before comparing, let's answer what is a heat pump. A heat pump is a refrigeration device that moves heat from one place to another. In winter, it pulls heat from outside air and transfers it indoors; in summer, it reverses and moves heat out of the house. Because it moves heat instead of burning fuel, it can be far more efficient than electric resistance heat.

Cold-climate heat pumps are now tested under ENERGY STAR's cold-climate specification and can maintain capacity at outdoor temperatures down to -13°F. So the technology is not the ceiling. The ceiling is the way the heat gets inside: if the house is set up for baseboard heaters, the heat pump has to work around that mismatch.

Dimension 1: Upfront Cost - The Part They Don't Put in the Quote

In our market in January 2025, a bad Burnham boiler gas valve is a $250 to $550 part, plus $200 to $400 for labor if you're not doing it yourself.
