Why I Stopped Buying Cheap Boilers (and You Should Too)

Let me be blunt: when a client asks me which boiler is cheaper, I stop listening. Because the price tag is the least important number in the whole equation. You might think a ceiling fan is a ceiling fan, but the cheap ones fail bearings in two years; a quality one lasts a decade. Same logic applies.

  • Upfront cost – the number on the invoice
  • Installation & setup – does it require specialized labor, extra parts, or modifications?
  • Emergency risk cost – how likely is a failure, and what's the cost of a rush repair?
  • Downtime cost – lost productivity, comfort, or even event cancellations
  • Maintenance & parts availability – can you get a replacement part in 24 hours, or do you wait a week?
  • Warranty & support – is the manufacturer easy to reach? Do they honor claims?

For a Burnham boiler, the upfront price is higher, but the other categories are drastically lower. The distributor network is solid – I can call a Burnham boiler distributor and get a part the same day in most metros. The manual (I specifically use the Burnham Series 3 boiler manual for wiring diagrams) is well-documented and clear. That matters when you're on a roof with a multimeter trying to figure out what's wrong.

Time Is the Hidden Cost

I once had a client who insisted on a budget brand because 'it's just a thermostat, how hard can it be?' First of all, a thermostat is not a boiler. Instead, I push for financing or phased investment. Or I recommend the most critical features (reliability, local parts availability) and cut elsewhere – like a simpler control panel or lower efficiency tier. But never at the expense of durability.

So Here's My Bottom Line

I'm not saying Burnham is the only brand worth buying. But I am saying this: stop comparing price tags. Start comparing the total cost of ownership. When you factor in emergency calls, downtime, and the headache of dealing with unreliable equipment, the expensive boiler almost always comes out cheaper.
