Start at the front of the boiler. If the jacket is locked or you need a special burner service key, stop and call a qualified technician. Locating a reset is not the same as opening the combustion chamber.

Step 1: Confirm whether your Burnham boiler is gas-fired or oil-fired

Burnham boiler reset button location depends on the burner system. Oil-fired Burnham boilers use a primary safety control that usually has a red reset button. Gas-fired units use an ignition control, and many gas controls do not have a reset button that a homeowner should press.

Look at the model plate and the wiring diagram before you touch anything. A gas-fired boiler with electronic ignition is not a Bunsen burner. It does not stay on if it loses flame. It locks out, and repeated attempts without finding the cause can turn a nuisance lockout into a dangerous one.

Step 2: Find the access panel and make the system safe

Turn the thermostat to off. Turn the service switch off. Wait about 30 seconds, then open whatever panel gets you to the burner or ignition control. On many Burnham boilers, the reset button is not behind the main front jacket panel. It is on the burner itself.

If your unit is oil-fired, you may need to remove an access cover from the burner housing. If it is gas-fired, the ignition control may be under a jacket panel near the gas valve. Do not remove a sealed combustion collector or disassemble the gas train.

Step 3: Locate the actual control with the reset button

  • Oil-fired Burnham boilers: Look for a gray or black box mounted to the burner. The reset button is usually a small red button on the top or face of that primary control. A label near the button often says reset.
  • Gas-fired boilers with intermittent ignition: Many of these controls do not have a manual reset button. Some clear a lockout when the thermostat is turned down for at least 30 seconds and then back up. Read the label on the control before pressing anything.
  • Gas-fired boilers with standing pilot: There may be no reset button at all. If the pilot will not stay lit, follow the gas valve instructions to relight it. If it fails twice, stop.

If you find a red button, press it only after checking that there is no gas odor and that the boiler is not in a flooded area.

Step 4: Press reset once only

With no smells and the access panel back in place, press the reset button firmly and release it. Do not push it with a screwdriver. Do not push it every few seconds.

My personal rule is one press, one ignition trial. On an oil-fired boiler, too many resets can send unburned oil into the chamber. On a gas-fired boiler, repeated attempts can cause unburned gas to build up. Neither of those is a mistake worth making for the sake of saving a service call.

Step 5: Watch one full trial for ignition

After the reset, the boiler should start its normal sequence. On an oil-fired unit, the burner motor should run and the ignition transformer should produce spark. On a gas-fired unit, the igniter and gas valve should open for a short trial period.

If the boiler fires and stays running, the reset was enough. If the control locks out again, that actually tells you something useful: the safety circuit is not stuck. The control is doing its job. The problem is somewhere else, and another reset will not fix it.

Step 6: Wait before the second reset

If the first reset fails, do not instantly reset it again. Give the control time to clear and let unburned fuel dissipate. Wait at least five minutes. If you smell any fuel oil or gas during those five minutes, stop and call a licensed technician.

After the wait, one more reset is acceptable. That is the two-strike limit in my shop. If the boiler locks out again after the second strike, the reset button was never the real culprit. The control is trying to protect the system from a condition that still exists.

Do not aim a misting fan at a hot control to cool it down faster. Moisture around electrical controls is a poor idea. Let the boiler cool naturally while you work through the next step.
